Four new stills from Look Back’s animated sequences, featuring Fujino and Kyomoto, have been released, capturing the rich world of the film.
The film partly employs the rotoscoping technique, in which animation is created based on live-action footage. Yoko Kuno serves as the rotoscoping animation director, and the production was handled by Shin-Ei Animation, known for Ghost Cat Anzu.
Set against beautiful backdrops, the film’s fantastical world is meticulously rendered. These nostalgic and beautiful animation stills capture Fujino and Kyomoto’s subtle expressions, the sea, the sky, and the scenery through a car window.
Regarding the animated sequences, Director Hirokazu Koreeda revealed his creative intent in a conversation with Tatsuki Fujimoto included in the theater program:
“In the final scene where Fujino returns to her workplace and picks up a pen, I thought about what she would carry forward on her back. I wanted to express a sense of optimism, that ‘the memory of the two once talking about their dream of making an anime comes back, the drawings Kyomoto created come to life, and she rebuilds her future.’ The image I had was of sound emanating from the drawings, them starting to move, and the two leaping about within the drawings.”
To coincide with the release of these stills, a special talk featuring original author Tatsuki Fujimoto and rotoscope animation director Yoko Kuno has also been released.
In the discussion, they talk about the behind-the-scenes process of creating the animation, specifically, how they explored the middle ground between live-action and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s artwork, as well as their thoughts on each other’s work.
